Erica James: Time for a Change

Time for a Change

Description

A vibrant, often humorous tale of life, love - and infidelity - from the bestselling author of PROMISES, PROMISES. Hilary had always thought she'd lived a charmed life. With a caring husband, David, and two lively children, she took an active part in both family and village life. Then, one Monday morning, Hilary's world is turned upside down. She discovers that David is having an affair. How could he? How could he put at risk their children and everything they have built together over the years? The question is, what should Hilary do? Turn a blind eye, much as neighbour Cindy has done over her own husband's various dalliances? Confront him, as her outspoken new friend Georgia suggests? Or perhaps she should throw herself at attractive newcomer to the village Nick Bradshaw...Whatever happens, it seems certain that for Hilary, life is never going to be quite the same again.

Deep Run Roots: Stories and Recipes from My Corner of the South

Description

Filled with the stories, traditions, ingredients, and recipes that define and celebrate the South, Deep Run Roots is the definitive record of modern Southern food through Vivian Howard's eyes. It weaves the story of her life through twenty-five chapters on the ingredients that make the food of Eastern North Carolina--and all of the South--so special, and shares more than 225 classic and contemporary recipes along the way. There is a dish in every chapter for cooks of every level of skill and interest. With tradition as the starting point, the recipes grow in complexity from simple things to make on a weeknight to more elaborate dishes served at Vivian's restaurants. In the summer, when her walk-in is flooded with blueberries, she makes Blueberry BBQ Chicken, Crispy Corn Cakes with Blueberry Corn Salsa, and Buttermilk Blueberry Sherbet. In the winter, when crates of turnips overrun the restaurant, she makes Seared Sea Scallops, Turnip and Butternut Agrodolce, Cider Braised Pork Shank with Roast Turnip Gremolata, and Potlikker Soup and Sweet Potato Cream. This book is Vivian's love letter to the South, preserving and reinterpreting the traditional foodways of her home.

Grief in Children: A Handbook for Adults pdf, epub, mobi

Atle Dyregrov,William Yule,Bill Yule: Grief in Children: A Handbook for Adults

Grief in Children: A Handbook for Adults

Description

'For years, I have strongly advised adults to read Grief in Children because I believe it is the most sympathetically written and accessible book on the topic. It is the thoughtful distillation of many years' clinical experience of working with bereaved children and their families.' - from the foreword by Professor William Yule Praise for the first edition: 'This is a very user-friendly book. It is presented in a way which enables the reader to browse or go direct to a certain section, but at the same time is engaging enough to sustain one's interest to read the whole book.' - Australian Social Work 'Dyregrov's writing is clear in its description, and explicit in its advice, and demonstrates that the daunting task of helping a child through grief is both manageable and rewarding...The book will, I'm sure, become required reading for all those touched by the care of bereaved children.' - Bereavement Care '...a handy, small book ideal for teachers, social workers, counsellors, parents and others faced with the task of understanding children in grief and trying to help them.' - Association for Child Psychology and Psychiatry Newsletter 'There is valuable material on grief at various ages and development...The question "What makes the grief worse?" is neatly answered and a brief, but useful, section alerts the helper to differences in the grief experienced by boys and girls. The chapters on care for bereaved children are packed with good sense and practical suggestions. Many interesting ideas are given on ways to deal with bereavement in the setting of the classroom. There is much to commend this handbook. It is of manageable length, giving information concisely and supplementing it with well-chosen quotations. A valuable book which I would recommend to my colleagues and to parents, to those who run playgroups and to any who seek to help young people in bereavement.' - Lifeline (Magazine of the National Association of Bereavement Services) This fully updated second edition of Grief in Children provides an accessible overview of children's understanding of death at different ages and gives a detailed outline of exactly how the adults around them can best help them cope. Whether a child experiences the death of a parent, sibling, other relation or friend, or of a classmate or teacher, it is important for those caring for bereaved children to know how to respond appropriately to the child's needs. This book deals with a range of common physical and psychological responses and describes the methods of approaching grief in children that have been shown to work best. The author provides guidance on how loss and bereavement should be handled at school, explains when it is appropriate to involve expert professional help and discusses the value of bereavement groups for children and support for caregivers. Illustrated with case studies and incorporating current research, this book is essential reading for parents, carers, counsellors, teachers and all those concerned with the welfare of bereaved children. Dr Atle Dyregrov is a clinical psychologist and Director of the Center for Crisis Psychology in Bergen, Norway, which he founded with a colleague in 1988. He is a member of the executive board of The Children and War Foundation and a founding member of the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. Dr Dyregrov is the author of numerous publications, journal articles, and books. Professor Emeritus William Yule is a clinical psychologist and Professor Emeritus of Applied Child Psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London. He is Chair of the Children and War Foundation and Honorary Psychologist Advisor to the British Army. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies in 2005.

Eat the Cookie, Buy the Shoes: Giving Yourself Permission to Lighten Up

Description

Engrained in our culture is the belief that unbending discipline is the only sure way to success. You must go to the gym five times a week, never order the dessert, and don't even think about buying that dress you keep staring at in the store window. Breaking from such a regimented lifestyle is a sign of weakness, right? Wrong! Joyce Meyer tells us why we need to break our routines now and then and even ...indulge.Celebration is a concept that we reserve for very few occasions, but God instructs his people to celebrate and indulge throughout the Bible. This is a concept that Joyce Meyer believes has been overlooked for far too long. In her latest book, she provides ample evidence that God loves a party and wants his children to enjoy good things.Although setting rules in our lives are important, it's just as important that we break them from time-to-time. Structure is a powerful tool, but it can have a negative effect on us. Balance is a core value in life and every once in awhile we deserve to indulge in a guilty pleasure or two. So don't feel bad about straying from your goals every once in awhile. In fact, embrace it: eat the cookie, and buy the shoes!

"For Michael Sandel, justice is not a spectator sport," "The Nation"'s reviewer of "Justice "remarked. In his acclaimed book based on his legendary Harvard course Sandel offers a rare education in thinking through the complicated issues and controversies we face in public life today. It has emerged as a most lucid and engaging guide for those who yearn for a more robust and thoughtful public discourse. "In terms we can all understand," wrote Jonathan Rauch in "The New York Times," "Justice ""confronts us with the concepts that lurk . . . beneath our conflicts." Affirmative action, same-sex marriage, physician-assisted suicide, abortion, national service, the moral limits Fractions, Grade 3 download epub of markets Sandel relates the big questions of political philosophy to the most vexing issues of the day, and shows how a surer grasp of philosophy can help us make sense of politics, morality, and our own convictions as well. "Justice "is lively, thought-provoking, and wise an essential new addition to the small shelf of books that speak convincingly to the hard questions of our civic life."

America's Test Kitchen: Pressure Cooker Perfection

Pressure Cooker Perfection

Description

100 foolproof pressure-cooker recipes that will change the way you cook. InPressure Cooker Perfection, the first volume in our new test kitchen handbook series, the editors at America's Test Kitchen demystify an appliance that to many home cooks remains intimidating -- but shouldn't. Modern pressure cookers are safer, quieter, more reliable, and more user-friendly than old-fashioned jiggle-top models. And they can prepare a wide range of foods -- everything from barbecue to risotto -- in record time. Cooking under pressure results in better-tasting dishes because every drop of flavor is trapped in the sealed pot. This fact, combined with the shorter cooking time, means that your dishes will be supercharged with flavor. And cooking under pressure is versatile. While they're ideal for roasts and stews, pressure cookers can also turn out perfectly tender beans, grains, and legumes in short order. If ever there was a cooking method that could benefit from the obsessive trial and error that our test kitchen is known for, this is it. When cooking time is compressed, every minute matters, and when flavors are amplified, even a small change becomes significant. We ran hundreds of tests in fifteen pressure cookers to find out what works and what doesn't, and we deliver the foolproof, guaranteed-successful recipes inPressure Cooker Perfection. With this foolproof guide to cooking under pressure, every home cook will be guaranteed success."

The Work of Day and Night: Suyuti's Collection of Prophetic Practices and Prayers

Description

Imam Jalal al-Din Suyuti (d. 911ah/1505ce) was one of the most prolific writers produced by the Islamic world. He authored over 700 works in virtually every field known to Islamic science including the famous Jalalayn commentary of the Qur'an (of which he was co-author). His works are still widely used, and his name is a by-word for breadth of learning, voluminous output, and a saintly life. The Work of Day and Night is Imam Suyuti's collection of the daily and nightly practices of the Prophet of Islam and includes instructions on how to follow the Prophet in everyday actions and supplications. In it the reader will find: the prayers said upon awakening, before eating and when dressing; the acts carried out at various times of the day, and between prayers; the supplications recited in times of distress as well as of intimacy; and much else. This book is invaluable for learning the Sunna of the Prophet and integrating it into one's life.

Fear and Trembling: Dialectical Lyric by Johannes De Silentio

Description

In Fear and Trembling, Soren Kierkegaard's infamous and controversial work made a lasting impression on both modern Protestant theology and existentialist philosophers such as Sartre and Camus. This Penguin Classics edition is translated from the Danish with an introduction by Alistair Hannay. Writing under the pseudonym of 'Johannes de silentio', Kierkegaard expounds his personal view of religion through a discussion of the scene in Genesis in which Abraham prepares to sacrifice his son Isaac at God's command. Believing Abraham's unreserved obedience to be the essential leap of faith needed to make a full commitment to his religion, Kierkegaard himself made great sacrifices in order to dedicate his life entirely to his philosophy and to God. The conviction shown in this religious polemic - that a man can have an exceptional mission in life - informed all Kierkegaard's later writings. His 'teleological suspension of the ethical' challenged the contemporary views of Hegel's universal moral system, and was also hugely influential for both protestant theology and the existentialist movement. Alastair Hannay's introduction evaluates Kierkegaard's philosophy and the ways in which it conflicted with more accepted contemporary views. This edition also includes detailed notes to complement this groundbreaking analysis of religion, and a new chronology. Danish-born S ren Kierkegaard (1813-55) wrote on a wide variety of themes, including religion, psychology, and literature. He is remembered for his philosophy, which pioneered the idea of the Absurd, and was influential and in the development of 20th century existentialism. His other works include The Sickness unto Death, Either/Or, and Papers and Journals, all of which are available in Penguin Classics. If you enjoyed Fear and Trembling, you might like Kierkegaard's The Sickness unto Death, also available in Penguin Classics.

the grueling, nearly catastrophic location shoot in Tunisia and the subsequent breakneck dash at Elstree Studios in London Joyce Meyer, #1 "New York Times" bestselling author, encourages you not to waste another minute. There is something special, valuable waiting for you to discover in each day. And when you spend time with God daily, asking Him to help you find it, you'll unlock the wonderful purpose He has in store for you. When you commit to letting God direct you, instead of resting passively in your own disappointments, you'll be open to receive greater happiness and blessings than you ever thought possible. But Humphrey had his own secrets; and when events occurred that he could not control, the outcome for his Fear and Trembling: Dialectical Lyric by Johannes De Silentio download ebook pdf ambitions was entirely unexpected. As for Hannah, her Thursday friend was to become the saviour of her very existence - but would he manage to resolve his own not inconsiderable personal difficulties and offer Hannah the happiness she craved? With its deceptively simple theme, The Thursday Friend is a remarkable novel that displays Catherine Cookson's consummate ability to explore human relationships. It will enjoy immense popularity among her many readers throughout the world.

Virginia Berridge: Public Health: A Very Short Introduction

Public Health: A Very Short Introduction

Description

Public health is a term much used in the media, by health professionals, and by activists. At the national or the local level there are ministries or departments of public health, whilst international agencies such as the World Health Organisation promote public health policies, and regional organisations such as the European Union have public health funding and policies. But what do we mean when we speak about 'public health'? In this Very Short Introduction Virginia Berridge explores the areas which fall under the remit of public health, and explains how the individual histories of different countries have come to cause great differences in the perception of the role and responsibilities of public health organisations. Thus, in the United States litigation on public health issues is common, but state involvement is less, while some Scandinavian countries have a tradition of state involvement or even state ownership of industries such as alcohol in connection with public health. In its narrowest sense, public health can refer to the health of a population, the longevity of individual members, and their freedom from disease, but it can also be anticipatory, geared to the prevention of illness, rather than simply the provision of care and treatment. In the way public health deals with healthy as well as sick people it is therefore a separate concept from health services, which deal with the sick population. Drawing on a wide range of international examples, Berridge demonstrates the central role of history to understanding the amorphous nature of public health today. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
